01:23
Part 2 of 2
The richest girl in the world, the tall no longer awkward heiress Doris Duke has finally come into the first part of her fortune. Now everyone is trying to find out what she will do next.
No big celebration was held the day of, but a formal party might be forthcoming. That is unless other matters don’t interfere beforehand.
01:48
Saturday, November 25th, 1933
Over in Philadelphia, crowds gather to watch the Army – Navy football game at Franklin Field. From their box, heir and industrialist “Atty” Atwater Kent, Jr. watches the game with President Franklin Roosevelt’s daughter Mrs. Curtis Dall (maiden name Anna Roosevelt). Within the 80,000 gathered, the Secretary of War, the superintendent of Annapolis, a different West Point graduate, and America Cup winner Harold “Mike” Vanderbilt with his new wife are among the notables spotted in town. Army wins.
02:27
For one after party, heir to two fortunes “Jimmy” James H.R. Cromwell hosts a dinner at the recently reopened Whitemarsh Hall. His mother Eva Stotesbury and stepfather E.T. Stotesbury will entertain there for another round of holiday traditions before heading down to Palm Beach for the winter.
Jimmy’s ardent plans to seduce and marry Doris seem to be on pause as he is nowhere near the heiress for any celebration. Her socially ambitious mother Nanaline Holt Inman Duke suspects that Jimmy and the Stotesburys are no longer as wealthy as they present, so she can relax only a little bit. One must always be suspicious whether any declaration of love is from the heart or to replenish a flat pocketbook.
03:13
In the meantime, the sheriff delivers another present for Doris at Duke Farms in New Jersey.
Court papers are served seeking damages relating to dog bites. Mrs. Cinina Rafaela (alternates Cimina or Fafeala) claims she was attacked by 4 Great Danes at a water fountain near the front of the Duke Farms estate. After several vicious bites, she now suffers paralysis in her arm. The lawsuit also sues both Doris’s older half-brother Walker Inman and estate superintendent J. Irving Shaffer. The total amount requested $30k includes $25k for damages and for Rafaela’s husband $5k to reimburse medical expenses (today a total of $749.5k for $624.6k in damages, with an extra $124.9k for medical expenses). The attack happened on September 17th, 1932 – the incident or attack is not alleged, but the nature and extent of damage and the amount of expenses are questionable.
04:14
More not so pleasant reminders, other news articles point out again the recent kidnapping threats this last summer against Doris and a much lesser heiress Janet Snowden, after the latter’s brief 5 day marriage to an Italian prince. For Nanaline, the only fate worse than a kidnapping is a poorly conceived marriage with a broke suitor, royal or not.
Someone is always scheming to get money, whether injured parties, romance scams, and of course kidnapping,…
Which goes back to the most famous unsolved kidnapping of the era.
04:53
Sunday, November 26th, 1933
After some work with the League of Nations in London and Paris, Charles Lindbergh and his wife Anne Morrow Lindbergh hop back into their plane. They zigzag from place to place as they inspect potential aviation routes to aide in developing a transatlantic American – European air mail service. This current journey ends upon their safe arrival in Cape Verde, Africa
Despite their focus on the future, the unsolved kidnapping and murder case of their firstborn son remains high in public interest. Back in October 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt announces the FBI will take over the investigation into the Lindbergh Baby Kidnapping Case.
05:37
Meanwhile another kidnapping case has a very different outcome in San Jose, California.
Only hours earlier, the mutilated body of recently kidnap and murder victim 22 year old Brooke Hart is recovered near the San Francisco Bay. Son and heir of a local department store owner, the popular Hart had gone missing weeks ago.
Hart was kidnapped on November 9th with a ransom demanded despite he was already dead hours into the crime. On November 16th, the kidnapper-murderers are arrested and quickly confess. Fearing potential vigilante justice they are moved to a safer location. They are indicted on November 22nd.
06:17
Then this morning 4 days later, Hart’s body is found by duck hunters along the Alameda County shore.
Now a crowd gathers around the Santa Clara County Jail. After 9pm a mob breaks out led by a boy in his teens. Tear gas does not detour the anger. Rocks are thrown back in retaliation. Water hoses by the mob are used on the jail. For two hours, the sheriff and 50 officers withstand the siege, barricade the inside, but are eventually breached.
By 11 o’ clock, the crowd reaches the second floor. Police try to hold them off behind the heavy steel door. However the angry and determined mob use a heavy steel battering ram which breaches a brick wall. Within minutes, they are at the third floor jail cells.
07:05
The vigilante mob of 5,000 drag confessed slayers Thomas H. Thurmond and Jack Holmes from their jail cells. In the street, the two men are stripped and beaten. The prisoners are forced on a death march down alleyways to St. James Square where ropes are thrown over the sycamore trees. Lynched on opposite north and south sides of the public park.
Over 10,000 watch the bodies hang. Several women faint at the spectacle. The crowd waits good and long to make sure both are dead.
An hour later, the fervor finally dies down, and the crowd dissipates allowing the authorities to reclaim the bodies. Some take bits of tree branches as souvenirs.
Shortly afterwards, California Governor James Rolph, Jr. announces there will be no prosecutions for the participants as justice has been served.
The madness of crowds can never be guaranteed.
08:04
Monday, November 27th, 1933, New York
Outside the Duke mansion, a somber aspect greets passerbys whose bent heads fight the frigid gales of wind rushing down Fifth Avenue. Little can be seen from the streets, yet a small crowd still gathers in anticipation of getting a peek at those crossing through the double glass doors.
Inside bright lights blaze for the energy heiress. Fairly modest decorations include flowers in the reception hall and high on the dining room walls. Dressed in livery uniforms with buttons embossed with a large “D,” footmen greet the thirty-one guests. The very select and prestigious group includes the now glamorous no longer chubby fashionista Princess Barbara Hutton Mdivani, her new husband ruggedly handsome Prince Alexis Mdivani, the ever charming Prince Serge Obolensky, Grand Duke Dmitri, along with the previous birthday companion Mrs. Shonnard.
09:09
First arrival, Mrs. Allan A. Ryan Jr. wears a tiara and a black velvet wrap over a metallic gown. Second arrival, Wall Street wizard Harrison Williams and his wife Mrs. Harrison Williams, who stays warm in a hip length luscious sable over a trailing brown chiffon dress. Mrs. Allen Gouveneur Wellman wears a long ruby velvet coat with sable trim, a white frock, and white tulle over her graying tresses. Lady Mendl in long sable cape and tulle headdress to protect her hair. Famed society hostess Elsa Maxwell in black chiffon dress and black velvet coat. Chic and pretty Mrs. Robert McAdoo protects her hair with circular veil while exiting her limousine. Other guests are in glittering tiaras and sables. Doris again wears traditional white, but the question remains did the often unadorned richest girl wear her new tiara?
10:07
As for the description of the evening activities, only soft music and a cake with candles are mentioned. In fact, Barbara’s attendance seems to be the most exciting part of the birthday soiree.
What is noticed by everyone though rarely stated out loud, that Doris has no designated male companion. Even one astrologer predicts Doris might not have much luck in that area unlike her fellow Scorpio Barbara. Though barely a week apart, much is made of the variation of Barbara’s moon in Capricorn and five planets to Doris’s moon in Aries and three planets with a bigger year predicted for both from 1934 to 1935.
Somewhat mischievously, some newspapers hint that Doris herself might eventually marry a newly available Mdivani prince. Both Prince Serge Mdivani and Prince David Mdivani are newly divorced and in need of new fortunes. Could the heiresses be destined as sisters-in-laws?
11:09
Beyond the birthday activities, other more romantic news features Barbara’s cousin Woolworth Donahue and his fiancée Dorothy “Dottie” Fell will postpone their wedding until Dottie’s aunt arrives from London after Christmas.
Days after the birthday party, Cholly Knickerbocker rehashes over several different news articles the accordion gift and how that has thrilled Doris most as she throws herself into having music lessons. Noting Doris cannot yet play “Lost Chord” or “Stormy Weather,” Cholly playfully dubs her “society’s richest accordion player.”
Probably the only thing worse for Nanaline than the accordion would be the bagpipes. But just give Doris a little more time.

Section 2 – History & Historiography
[Music Fade Out]
12:16
Like I mentioned in Part 1, this episode became too large and unwieldy that I had to split it up. A hard thing to do as so many little details tie together so well. This is becoming a perpetual dilemma that I am trying to sort out, though the source of this trouble comes from a wonderful problem – I am finding too many exciting and fantastic details that I can’t resist in sharing.
By now, you must understand I am not doing a traditional documentary format. Not in the story structure, and definitely not in the details. I am delightfully delving into far more microscopic and anecdotal evidence within a defined period of time. Still because I know each character’s real-life full-length story, I can see links, connections, and overlaps knowing the results far into the future.
13:14
The overall timeline and main plots I sorted out over a decade ago, but now the real work happens. Each episode begins with a topic and 3 key themes that interweave throughout. I dig about news articles to see how much is there. Then I go back and review older sources like biographies to see what is known and how it is presented. Most topics might have a few words, a sentence or two, *some maybe a paragraph or more. But the time period I cover is rarely more than two whole chapters within a lifetime story.
That means what I am presenting is *often much more fleshed out than what is commonly available. Part of that is nature of how I chose to develop this story and podcast. Now I did read most of the biographies – once long before I developed the story, then again when I began development. Then I go back over and over as the story requires. Thus I will find references later I would not catch or understand until I go looking for them.
14:20
Case in point, I will find some of the overlaps though much smaller in description than I will give. Stephanie Mansfield’s Richest Girl In The World biography describes the accordion by Maury Paul / Cholly Knickerbocker, part of the dinner party, the Great Danes with a vague reference to the lawsuit, and even Brooke Hart’s kidnapping. Ted Schwartz’s Trust No One mentions the dog attack lawsuit and a New York Times article that recounts all the usual known details about Doris. For this Part 2, the other 3 biographies only overlap with the general kidnapping concerns and wealth.
That means most of this episode comes directly from primary source material – which is contemporary newspapers. Now in Part 1, Nanaline Duke’s contradicting and dismissive interview really sets up the second half featured in Part 2. The interview came from snippets found in two articles by two different small newspapers in Minnesota and South Carolina. Other similar articles appear after the later dinner party with tidbits about the accordion by Cholly Knickerbocker / Maury Paul, also referenced in Mansfield’s Richest Girl.
15:34
Now this reliance on newspapers for these stories brings some challenges with great rewards.
I guess I should explain a little more than the manner of my research. My initial newspaper research occurred through university online databases. Pro-Search is fantastic. I type in key words and get exact articles, somewhat – always tricky what does and doesn’t match. But oh the prime sources, the New York Times, London Times, plus others and dating way way back in history. However when Covid made that option inaccessible, I got a Newspapers.com account. Rarely do I get New York Times, but I get a lot of others. However the key words give me everything on the same page and not exact articles. So when I click to open, I see the whole page and thus adjacent stories. Hit or miss, and several “Oh my’s.”
16:41
This is how and why I keep mentioning things like Hitler, Nazis, Mussolini, Lindberghs, and such. Because I can see these personal interest stories together, contemporary overlaps, and similarly the prevalence of certain topics.
I mean we have always been aware that there are inherent dangers to wealth and fame. History is littered with tales. And yet, it still seems a somewhat outsized paranoia in another sense.
17:15
Throughout the biographies and news articles written about Doris Duke, there is constant fear regarding kidnapping and personal harm. Mentions of bodyguards, lawsuits, and general mistrust of people even those closest. Once again, this feels a bit paranoid. That is until you really look back at the multiple individual incidents as well as the overall culture at the time.
From birth, Doris became a target. Much from which, she was shielded until her father’s death when she finally saw the bags of mail both begging for money and threatening her life. Then the Lindbergh baby kidnapping immediately grabbed everyone’s attention. And while our history books reduce it to a few paragraphs, for over two years the newspapers constantly mention it in one way or another. An update, a lack of update, an anniversary reminder, and if nothing else whatever Charles Lindbergh and Anne Morrow Lindbergh are doing and where they are traveling.
18:17
Then there are all the other kidnapping cases. In San Francisco, the kidnapping and murder of Brooke Hart quickly escalates into storming of the jail and public lynching of his confessed killers. The 5 day marriage and still ongoing divorce of young heiress Janet Snowden with her kidnapping threats are mentioned next to Doris Duke’s threats in Newport and New York during the summer of 1933. Plus all the *other smaller and even fraudulent kidnapping cases that keep popping up across the country. Yes, there are attention seeking Sherry Papini’s even back then.
Should we really be surprised? Look at today’s modern social media – one good story goes viral and stays in the consciousness far too long until replaced by the next one.
Only some stories never go away.
19:05
During the Great Depression, there wasn’t social media, but there were plenty of newspapers, and they all needed topical subject matter. From large cities like the New York Times to the tiny small town presses, stories and photos could be syndicated. Crime always sells but so does wealth and also fame, and what we now refer to as celebrity. With that, famous wealthy people especially with a sensational love life get even more press attention and become potential targets for other schemes.
Thus with the much anticipated 21st birthdays coupled with multimillion dollar inheritances, the newspapers are having a field day, and some of the quotes are absolutely amazing.
“Love may be blind but not to Doris Duke’s millions.” – Waukegan News-Sun December 06, 1933
“The scourge of gold is upon her, the thing for which so many strive.” – Burlington Free Press November 27, 1933
Again repeated exceedingly – Doris’s oft quoted, “I wish I could go into a store and shop just as any girl.” Many quip back they wish they could shop with her money.
20:23
Lastly, you know it never fails that if I try and ignore or skip a rabbit hole search it inevitably eats at me. Back in Barbara Hutton’s birthday special, she featured a famous mindreader and mentalist Joseph Dunninger. Now I did do a preliminary search via the newspaper archive, but in speed and overwhelmed by the already fat episode I did not do a quick google search. So there are just a few details I would like to add now. Dunninger was a close friend of Houdini, and like Houdini Dunninger was a debunker of fraudulent mediums and the Spiritualist phenomena. He would perform for Theodore Roosevelt and Thomas Edison in their private homes and for Franklin Roosevelt at the White House.
21:10
I know some of this seems superfluous, but I really do enjoy the sense of understanding and actually experiencing this period with a little more clarity.
These digressions, anecdotes, and other tales all have meaning in the end. These stories get crazier and crazier and more entangled. But then again, that is a lot of what makes it fun.
21:38
[Music – It’s An Old Southern Custom by Carroll Gibbons, Album The Age of Style – Hits from the 30s]
Section 3 – Contemporary & Personal Relevance
[Music Fade Out]
21:55
So many misconceptions and fantasies surround what we think might be desirable – money, fame, beauty,…
More like selective envy, wanting only 1 part with what the imagination thinks that would be or feel like, without understanding or acknowledging the negatives. As we see in this series, the perpetual threat of kidnapping isn’t merely a theme but a reality. A threat that persists even to this day.
22:28
Netflix 2025 Frankenstein adaptation is heavily influenced by the 1998 kidnapping of Guillermo del Toro’s father. At the time, the newly successful director del Toro had been unable to pay the $1 million dollar ransom (in 2025 just under $2 million), so new friend and the Titanic, Terminator, and future Avatar director James Cameron loaned him the money. The father was not returned after the payment delivery, and the money was never recovered. During the captivity, del Toro had hoped to rescue his father and after which have a better relationship with him. His dad returned still fairly quiet and very avoidant and bitter over his captivity. Del Toro quickly moved his family to the United States for safety thereafter. Still it took many years to resolve the aftermath of the kidnapping. Fortunately, the two men did have a semi reconciliatory discussion about what each went through before his father’s death nearly two decades later.
23:34
When discussing the themes in his Frankenstein, del Toro talks about the analogy of the father – son relationship and how he divided this film in two sections where the son grows up and replicates his father with his son the Creature. In the end, there is hopefully some redemption in the film adaptation.
Alas not everyone can take their pain and turn it into art. Some of our heirs and heiresses are drawn to and supportive of the arts, but alas they struggle in the attempts to create their own.
However they have left us with a trove of information in which we can explore their world in hopes we might understand our own just a little better.
24:19
**Due to the delayed release of this episode, I have a couple of updates. First, there is little difference between December 2025 and February 2026 inflation rates, so the numbers given are still relatively close if not nearly exactly the same. A marginal increase of about .1% that would mean on an estimated $1 million estimated figures roughly only $1k more and for $1 billion only $1 million in today’s currency.
24:48
Second, during recording and editing of these last two episodes, we have another kidnapping tragedy playing out in our news. Today Show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother Nancy Guthrie went missing from her Arizona home with signs of trouble. While still hoping for a safe recovery, skepticism is growing after 3 weeks.
25:11
It is always fun to see other Instagram accounts that occasionally mention various people within our podcast. One contributor to the previously mentioned Only Natural Diamonds, which I mentioned in Part 1, is Antique Jewellry Historian Zuleika Gerrish, who has her own fabulous Instagram account with beautiful photos and details. 25:37
Now I have mentioned that if you wanted to learn certain things about the real people covered in our tales it would not be hard with a precursory search. Many are very well documented, and there are links well into our present. I have avoided trying to give out later in life spoilers, which I plan to reveal after our series conclude. However I cannot resist a new revelation to me that also isn’t readily known. The spoiler gives away only a few tidbits to those who are unaware of the history and nothing for those who do know where this story is heading. Still the revelation is too good not to share right now.
